Xatśūll First Nation Petitions Ottawa for Emergency Caribou Protection
The B.C. Interior nation says decades of habitat loss and continued logging have left southern mountain caribou populations near collapse

Xatśūll First Nation, located north of Williams Lake, has joined the Sylix Okanagan Nation in petitioning the federal government to issue an emergency protection order for southern mountain caribou under the Species at Risk Act.
Chief Rhonda Phillips says the province continues to approve forestry activity in critical caribou habitat despite its own recommendations, and that her community has been unable to hunt caribou for more than three decades.
A University of Northern B.C. researcher says predator control programs have helped in the short term, but warns that continued habitat loss, particularly from logging, threatens to push some local herds toward local extinction.
