Alberta Opens Door to Self-Paid MRI and CT Scans Without a Doctor's Referral
Starting Friday, residents can pay out of pocket for diagnostic imaging as the province touts earlier cancer detection

As of July 31, Albertans are able to self-refer and pay privately for MRIs, CT scans, ultrasounds and X-rays without needing a doctor's referral, under a new system introduced by the provincial government.
Premier Danielle Smith says the change is meant to catch disease earlier, and patients who receive a new cancer diagnosis through a self-paid test can apply for reimbursement at publicly funded rates within a year.
Critics, including opposition health critic Sharif Haji, argue the move could create a two-tier health system that favours those who can pay, while the government insists publicly funded diagnostic access will not be affected.
