A group of residents in southside Edmonton's Windermere neighbourhood say they feel unheard after raising repeated objections to a city plan that would let manicured storm ponds and green spaces grow into a more natural, low-maintenance state.
Members of a local coalition argue the change could lower property values, reduce sightlines for parents watching children outdoors, and attract more wildlife such as coyotes into the area. The city maintains that naturalization improves flood resilience, cuts landscaping costs and supports local plant and animal species, pointing to past public consultations that were largely supportive.
Naturalization work in Windermere has been paused while the city adjusts its planting plans and schedules further meetings with the community. A local councillor says he plans to meet with residents directly to address concerns about how the consultation process has been communicated.
