Ottawa Investigating After Canadian NATO Intern Held on Spying Charges

Public safety minister vows a full review of security screening following arrest in Belgium

Published: July 27, 2026

Canada's Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree says the government is treating an espionage case in Belgium with the utmost seriousness. A Canadian woman working as an intern at NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons was arrested after Belgian authorities accused her of espionage and participating in a criminal organization.

Belgian prosecutors say security staff at the NATO facility first flagged concerns before referring the matter to the country's military intelligence service.

Speaking to reporters in British Columbia, Anandasangaree declined to comment on the specifics of the case but confirmed that officials are examining whether the suspect had any prior connection to Canadian government agencies.

He said the review is meant to strengthen security vetting procedures and prevent similar incidents going forward.
