Kincardine Asks Residents to Cut Water Use During Lake Huron Pipeline Repairs

Daytime conservation call runs through August 1 as crews replace a chlorination line protecting the intake from invasive mussels

Published: July 27, 2026

Municipal officials in Kincardine, Ontario are asking residents to scale back water use this week while crews carry out scheduled maintenance on the town's water system. Households are being asked to limit consumption daily between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. from July 27 through August 1, while the work is underway.

The maintenance involves replacing a chlorination line that runs nearly 750 metres into Lake Huron along the raw water intake. The line disperses chlorine to stop zebra mussels, an invasive species, from colonizing the pipe and restricting the flow of drinking water to the community.

Officials are recommending simple steps such as postponing laundry loads, shortening showers, delaying outdoor watering and turning off taps when not in use. Invasive mussels have cost Great Lakes municipalities hundreds of millions of dollars in upkeep, making preventive maintenance like this a recurring summer task for lakeside towns.
