Heavy Rain Forces Evacuations Along Vancouver Island's West Coast Trail

Parks Canada calls popular multi-day hike impassable, urges visitors to delay trips until Thursday

Published: July 28, 2026

Parks Canada is helping hikers evacuate sections of Vancouver Island's West Coast Trail after days of heavy rain left creek and river crossings too dangerous to attempt on foot.

The 75-kilometre backcountry route through Pacific Rim National Park draws roughly 7,500 hikers a year and is known for its difficulty, featuring dozens of ladder systems, thick mud and river fords even in dry conditions. With more rain forecast through Wednesday, officials are urging anyone with upcoming reservations to delay their trip until at least Thursday.

Parks Canada says hikers who choose to postpone will be able to use their permit once conditions improve, and anyone booked between July 27 and August 1 can request a full refund if they decide to cancel instead.
