Gordie Howe International Bridge Opens to Traffic After Years of Delays

The $6.4-billion Windsor-Detroit span welcomed its first vehicles Monday, with pedestrian and cycle access set to follow in early August

Published: July 28, 2026

The Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan officially opened to vehicle traffic this week, capping a project that took more than a decade to complete. Personal vehicles now pay roughly eight dollars to cross, while commercial trucks are charged per axle, with discounted rates available to travellers who register for the bridge authority's account program.

Officials say the crossing is expected to ease congestion at the aging Ambassador Bridge and support roughly a billion dollars in trade that moves between the two countries each day. Pedestrians and cyclists will gain access to the bridge's multi-use path in early August, though e-bikes remain restricted for now while local officials review the rules.

Travellers are reminded that a passport or other approved identification is required to cross, even for those who only plan to walk partway before returning to Canada. Authorities are also cautioning against carrying restricted items such as cannabis or firearms, which remain prohibited or tightly controlled at the border despite the bridge's opening.
