Ford Pushes Carney and Fellow Premiers to Speak Up Louder Against Trump Tariffs

Ontario premier says he won't fight the trade battle alone, though he insists Team Canada isn't falling apart

Published: July 27, 2026

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney and other provincial leaders to take a tougher public stance against the latest U.S. tariff threats. Meeting with fellow premiers in Charlottetown, Ford argued that Canada needs a unified "Team Canada" front and said he felt at times like he was the only one speaking out forcefully.

He renewed his call to consider using Canadian energy exports as leverage, though several other premiers, including Alberta's Danielle Smith and Saskatchewan's Scott Moe, rejected that idea outright.

Despite the pointed remarks, Ford insisted relations among the premiers remain solid and said it will fall to Carney to bring the provinces together on a response before new 50 percent duties on a range of Canadian goods take effect next month.
