Edmonton Declares Its Wettest Summer Ever After Storm Floods Roads, Cancels Concert

City seeks provincial disaster aid as rainfall smashes a record set more than 70 years ago

Published: July 28, 2026

Edmonton has officially recorded its wettest summer on record, according to Environment Canada, after a powerful thunderstorm dumped 30 millimetres of rain on the city in a single hour Saturday night. The season's total rainfall has now reached 503.7 millimetres, surpassing a record that stood since 1953.

The storm knocked out power to tens of thousands of Epcor customers, flooded several roadways and forced the evacuation of a packed outdoor concert at Commonwealth Stadium, where organizers moved thousands of fans to sheltered areas before cancelling the show. City crews spent Monday clearing debris and reopening roads, though a few remained closed due to flooding.

The City of Edmonton says it has applied for provincial disaster funding to help cover an estimated $26 million in uninsured damage from June's storms alone, with further claims expected as crews continue assessing the damage from this month's rainfall.
