Carney Sets Aug. 31 Byelections in Three Ridings Across Canada
Votes in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec will fill seats left vacant by MPs who resigned or took new posts

Prime Minister Mark Carney has called byelections for August 31 in three federal ridings: North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia, Beaches-East York in Ontario, and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec. The seats became vacant after their sitting MPs departed for other roles, including one who was named Canada's ambassador to the European Union and another who was appointed to the Senate.
While the Liberals currently hold a majority in the House of Commons, the party's seat count is expected to shrink slightly by autumn as another cabinet member steps down later next month. Even so, officials note the government would retain its majority regardless of the outcome in any of the three races.
Multiple parties have already named candidates for the contests, and further byelections are expected in the months ahead to fill additional vacant seats, including one in Quebec that has not yet been scheduled. The Prime Minister's Office says it will provide more details on the remaining vacancy in due course.
