Carney Sets Aug. 31 Byelections in Three Ridings

Liberals defend their grip on the Commons as voters in B.C., Ontario and Quebec head to the polls this summer

Published: July 27, 2026

Prime Minister Mark Carney has scheduled byelections for August 31 in three ridings left vacant this year: North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia, Beaches-East York in Ontario, and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec.

The seats opened up after their sitting MPs moved on to other roles, including a diplomatic posting and a Senate appointment. The Liberal Party currently holds a slim majority in the House of Commons, and the outcome of these races will shape the government's working margin heading into the fall sitting.

All the major parties, including the Liberals, Conservatives, NDP, Bloc Quebecois and Greens, have already begun naming candidates for the various ridings.

A fourth vacant seat in Quebec has not yet been called for a byelection, with the Prime Minister's Office saying more details will come later. Elections Canada rules give the government until mid-December to schedule that vote.
