Alberta Town Weighs Switch From RCMP to New Provincial Police Force

Rocky Mountain House council is exploring the Alberta Sheriffs Police Service as a possible alternative to its long-standing RCMP contract

Published: July 28, 2026

Rocky Mountain House, a town of about 8,000 people roughly 200 kilometres southwest of Edmonton, is formally exploring whether to switch its policing from the RCMP to Alberta's newly developing provincial force. The town's mayor says council decided to look at other options after years of watching local officers pulled away to cover calls in surrounding rural areas.

A consultant's report commissioned last year concluded the town could not afford to build its own standalone police service and recommended staying with the RCMP. Since then, however, a presentation from the Alberta Sheriffs Police Service has renewed council's interest, with officials pointing to potentially lower costs and a model focused specifically on policing within town limits.

Town leaders say no decision has been made and that public engagement sessions will be held before any final vote, as they await detailed cost comparisons between the two options. RCMP representatives, meanwhile, note the force's crime statistics in the area have improved and argue that federal resources, such as major crime units, are available at no extra cost to the municipality.
