University of Waterloo Launches New $10,000 Entrance Scholarship for International Students

Every fee-paying international student admitted to first-year degree studies starting in September 2026 will automatically qualify, with no application required

Published: July 19, 2026

The University of Waterloo has introduced a new $10,000 International Student Entrance Scholarship, automatically granted to fee-paying international students admitted to full-time, first-year degree studies beginning in September 2026. Unlike many scholarships, no separate application is needed; eligible students are considered as part of the standard admissions process.

The award can be combined with several other scholarships, including Waterloo's President's and Merit scholarships as well as faculty-specific awards. Students in the Faculty of Mathematics can access up to 10 Global Scholarships worth $12,000 to $40,000, plus dedicated awards of up to $40,000 for students from India applying to select programs.

The Faculty of Science offers 15 scholarships worth $25,000 to $80,000 for most of its programs, though these require an application by mid-February. Waterloo also runs dedicated scholarships worth up to $40,000 for students of African, African American, Afro-Latine, Black Canadian and Caribbean descent, alongside hundreds of additional awards once students are enrolled.

Beyond scholarships, the university points international students toward its co-op program as a major source of funding: students can earn between $9,600 and $22,800 per four-month work term, with most completing five or six such terms over the course of their degree. Waterloo's international work-study program adds further part-time earning potential of up to $2,000 per school term.

Need-based bursaries of up to $2,000 are also available to full-time international students after their first year. Together, the measures reflect a broader push among Canadian universities to keep studying abroad financially attainable as tuition costs for international students continue to climb.
