India Launches First Private-Sector Orbital Rocket

Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 deployed customer payloads into low-Earth orbit, making India the third country to reach orbit through a privately built rocket

Published: July 19, 2026

India has successfully tested its first private-sector orbital rocket, marking a milestone in New Delhi's ambition to become a major player in the global space economy. The three-stage, 22-metre Vikram-1 lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota and deployed customer payloads into a 450-kilometre low-Earth orbit, making India the third country to achieve orbital launch capability through a private company.

Vikram-1 can carry a payload of up to 350 kilograms and is fitted with robotic arms designed to help clear space debris. Alongside its commercial cargo, the rocket also carried experimental hardware, a lab-grown diamond and a miniature gold sculpture commemorating India's space programme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the launch, saying it would encourage young people to dream bigger and innovate fearlessly.

The test flight validated the rocket's propulsion, avionics, telemetry, guidance, navigation and control systems, according to manufacturer Skyroot Aerospace. Founded in 2018, Skyroot is among a new generation of Indian space startups that have drawn backing from global investors following the liberalisation of the country's space sector, and it became the first Indian space company to reach a one-billion-dollar valuation earlier this year.

Vikram-1 builds on Skyroot's earlier Vikram-S mission in 2022, a suborbital flight that reached space but did not place any payload into orbit. The company says it plans further test flights before moving to routine commercial missions, adding to India's growing list of milestones in both its public and private space programmes.

India's national space agency previously launched 104 satellites on a single rocket back in 2017, and in 2023 the country became the fourth in the world to complete a soft landing near the Moon's south pole. Officials say Vikram-1 is another step toward positioning India as a serious competitor in the fast-growing commercial launch market.
