The United States Consulate in downtown Toronto was struck by gunfire for the second time this year early Monday morning, prompting a high-speed police chase and an ongoing manhunt. Toronto police said an officer stationed near the building as part of a patrol put in place after a March shooting heard gunfire around 4:45 a.m. and saw a white sedan with no licence plates speed away, reaching over 140 km/h before officers called off the pursuit for safety reasons.
Deputy Chief Frank Barredo called the attack 'brazen' and 'despicable,' saying a single shell casing was found near the consulate and the building's facade was damaged, though no injuries were reported. A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy thanked Toronto police for their rapid response. The RCMP said it is working with local police and international partners on the investigation, describing threats of violence toward anyone in Canada as being taken very seriously.
The shooting follows a similar attack on the same consulate in March, which the RCMP labelled a national security incident and which led to three arrests tied to a broader investigation into young people allegedly hired to carry out shootings across the city, including at Jewish institutions. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow called the latest incident a 'brazen attack' and vowed that those responsible would be found.
