Taco Bell Canada Says Its Lettuce Is Safe Amid U.S. Parasite Outbreak
The fast food chain confirms none of the lettuce linked to a cyclospora outbreak at five U.S. locations was served north of the border, as health officials monitor a seasonal rise in the parasite

Taco Bell in Canada says the lettuce that triggered an outbreak of the diarrhea-causing parasite cyclospora in the United States has not been served at any of its Canadian restaurants, the company said in a social media statement this month.
Lettuce served at five Taco Bell restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia was identified as a source of the outbreak, with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting nearly 7,000 illnesses linked to it since May.
The Public Health Agency of Canada says it is not currently investigating any cyclospora outbreaks domestically, though it notes there is typically a seasonal increase in infections during spring and summer that is often linked to imported fruits and vegetables. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has said it remains in contact with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as the American investigation continues.
Cyclosporiasis is a gastrointestinal illness that typically causes watery diarrhea, along with symptoms such as loss of appetite, cramping and fatigue, and can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks if untreated. Health officials generally recommend thoroughly washing fresh produce and staying informed about recalls involving imported fruits and vegetables.
For now, Canadian diners can continue to enjoy their usual Taco Bell order, according to the company's statement, though the episode is a reminder that food safety incidents in one country can quickly raise questions across the border, even when the products themselves never crossed it.
