Ecuador and Canada Sign Free Trade Deal Covering Nearly All Exports
The agreement will make 99.6 percent of Ecuador's exportable goods duty-free in Canada, covering everything from bananas to shrimp.

Ecuador and Canada signed a free trade agreement that officials say will allow 99.6 percent of Ecuador's exportable goods to enter the Canadian market duty-free once it takes effect. The deal covers trade in goods and services, investment, e-commerce, labor and environmental standards, along with provisions on Indigenous peoples and dispute resolution.
More than 600 Ecuadorian products stand to gain tariff-free access under the agreement, including bananas, cacao, shrimp and a range of tropical fruits and vegetables. Ecuadorian officials said the deal also grants preferential access for flowers, tuna preparations, textiles, footwear and cosmetics, while excluding or protecting 227 sensitive agricultural products such as rice, corn, milk, meat and sugar.
Ecuador's government said the agreement puts the country on similar footing with regional competitors Colombia and Peru, which already have trade deals with Canada. The signing adds Ecuador to a growing list of South American nations pursuing closer economic ties with Ottawa as Canada looks to diversify its trading relationships beyond North America.
