Carney and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who have built a close personal rapport, used the visit to announce a new joint critical minerals alliance, along with a tax and investment treaty meant to spur business between the two countries. Together, Canada and Australia control a substantial share of the world's lithium, uranium and iron ore, resources both leaders argued could be co-developed to reduce dependence on any single dominant economy.
Carney was welcomed to Parliament House with a ceremonial gun salute before meeting Albanese's full cabinet, an unusual gesture reserved for close allies. He described the relationship as a source of strategic strength for both nations, while Albanese, referencing generations of Canadians who have settled in Australia, said the two countries have always recognized something of themselves in each other.
