Belgian federal prosecutors say a Canadian national of Chinese origin who was working as an intern at NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium, has been arrested on charges of espionage and participation in a criminal organization. Prosecutors said the woman, who was not publicly named, came to the attention of SHAPE's internal security services, who then alerted Belgium's military intelligence agency.
Canadian Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said the allegations are "quite serious" and that officials would examine whether the suspect had done any work for agencies back in Canada. Speaking at an event in British Columbia, he committed to getting "to the bottom of what happened" and ensuring similar incidents are prevented in the future.
The case adds to a string of recent security concerns involving Canadian personnel at allied military and intelligence installations abroad, and comes as NATO members continue to grapple with espionage threats inside alliance institutions. Belgian authorities have not disclosed which country the intern is alleged to have been spying for.
