The Royal Australian Navy's HMAS Sydney has been operating alongside the Royal Canadian Navy's HMCS Regina and New Zealand's HMNZS Aotearoa during Exercise Rim of the Pacific 2026, the world's largest international maritime exercise, held in and around the Hawaiian Islands. The three ships carried out a co-ordinated replenishment at sea, a manoeuvre that requires close coordination between crews to safely transfer fuel and supplies while underway.
RIMPAC 2026 has drawn more than thirty nations, dozens of surface ships and several submarines for weeks of combined training meant to strengthen interoperability among allied navies across the Indo-Pacific. Officials from the participating countries describe drills like the dual replenishment as practical proof that Canadian and Australian forces can operate seamlessly alongside one another under real operational conditions, not just in policy statements.
The exercise comes as Canada and Australia have deepened defence ties on multiple fronts this year, from a multibillion-dollar Arctic radar purchase to a new critical minerals alliance, with officials on both sides describing closer naval cooperation as a natural extension of that broader partnership between the two Commonwealth nations.
