Australian Pension Giant Pledges Up to $10 Billion in Canadian Infrastructure

IFM Investors, which manages money for Australia's largest retirement funds, is in talks with Ottawa about taking ownership stakes in Canadian airports and roads as part of a broader wave of Canada-Australia pension co-operation

IFM Investors, an infrastructure fund manager that invests on behalf of some of Australia's largest pension funds, has pledged to put up to $10 billion into Canada over the next decade, according to Canadian officials travelling with Prime Minister Mark Carney during his recent visit to Australia. The firm, which oversees more than $250 billion globally, has signalled interest in taking ownership stakes in Canadian airports and possibly major roads if Ottawa moves ahead with privatization.

The pledge follows a broader agreement between Canadian and Australian pension funds, among the best-capitalized institutional investors in the world, to co-operate on investment deals and pool capital to acquire large infrastructure assets. Officials say the arrangement is meant to draw the two Commonwealth countries closer together not just diplomatically but in business, at a time when both nations are looking to reduce their economic reliance on the United States and China.

An IFM executive said the fund is "looking at very large opportunities" in Canada, echoing the tone of a broader Canada-Australia push this year on critical minerals, defence and technology. Carney has made courting foreign capital a central plank of his economic strategy as traditional investment relationships with the United States face new strain.
