Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett officially opened her agency's newest international post in Ottawa this month, marking the first time the AFP has established a permanent liaison presence in Canada. Barrett, who became the ninth AFP commissioner and the first woman to lead Australia's federal police force last October, was welcomed by the Australian High Commission in Canada for the ceremony.
The new post is intended to deepen co-operation between Australian and Canadian law enforcement on transnational threats such as drug trafficking, human smuggling and online exploitation, building on decades of informal information-sharing between the two countries' police services. Officials from both nations described the opening as a new chapter in the broader Australia-Canada partnership, which has expanded rapidly across defence, security and economic files in recent months.
Australian and Canadian police have collaborated on major transnational investigations in the past, including operations targeting international drug syndicates, and supporters say a standing office in Ottawa will make that cooperation faster and more consistent going forward.
