About 100 high school graduates in Newfoundland and Labrador had a wave of excitement dashed after mistakenly receiving admission emails from Memorial University's Faculty of Engineering. The messages, sent to 103 applicants whose files were still pending review, included congratulatory phrases even though the university says they were only meant to relay registration information for already-accepted students. A follow-up email arrived three hours later asking recipients to disregard the celebratory language, but by then confused and upset families had already begun posting about it online. Associate dean Dennis Peters apologized for the mix-up, calling it a human error, and said the faculty is now putting stricter checks in place before mass emails go out. He noted the mistake has no bearing on students' actual admission chances, which will be decided once high school transcripts are reviewed later this month.
